When to schedule firmware updates on cold storage
Release notes, travel, and tax season
Firmware updates are rarely urgent the day a release posts — except when manufacturer advisories flag security issues. For routine releases, timing matters because updates temporarily change how comfortable you feel signing transactions.
After reading the release notes
We ask clients to forward or discuss release notes before booking. Display changes, derivation path clarifications, and Bluetooth stack updates affect session length differently. A fifteen-minute patch can become an hour if address verification is needed across multiple accounts.
Avoid high-stakes weeks
Tax filing weeks in Korea and personal travel with only a phone hot wallet are poor windows. Programme clients on our maintenance calendar usually place firmware checks in the middle month of each quarter, away from snapshot dates at quarter-end.
Security-critical releases
When advisories cite key-handling vulnerabilities, we offer expedited sessions. Acceptance remains optional, but we document the advisory in your ledger so a future auditor or family member can see you were informed.
Post-update verification
Regardless of timing, we always verify a known address on-device after update and record firmware version in the ledger. Skipping this step is how holders discover mismatches weeks later during a snapshot.
